“In The Metro“ 6 Sentence Summary

“In The Metro” depicts a man (the speaker) who meets a woman while he is in the Metro. He remembers her as “the girl with the shining legs”, and is very intrigued by her. Knowing that the girl “goes her way and [he] goes [his]” makes him very sad because he wishes to have seen her for longer. He feels robbed as “the escalator carried her away” to her destination. This gives him a feeling of loneliness, as he wished to have been able to see her again instead of going about his life like everyone else in the Metro. The last image depicts the speaker standing “on the platform with a shopping bag dangling from [his] hand” which makes him understand that such a small encounter can have huge impacts on people’s lives.
